What is the Twin Cities West Metro Asian Fair?

The Twin Cities Asian Fair is a free-entry festival dedicated to promoting and celebrating Asian culture and community. With over 100 booths, 300 performers, and 12,000 visitors, the Asian Fair brings dance, costume, games, food, cultural exhibits, and more. You are welcome to set aside time to explore before or after volunteering with CAA!

Volunteering with CAA at the Fair

At the event, CAA will table between 11am and 7pm. We’ll talk to attendees about how using animals for food harms them, and discuss plant-based eating. We’ll offer free games, resources, and magazines,

At the front table, we’ll have a spin wheel game where attendees guess an answer to a question that helps them learn about common animal agriculture practices.

Sample spin wheel questions include:

  • Chicken farmers are encouraged to provide how many square feet per chicken? [Answer: less than 1, according to the National Chicken Council and average weights]
  • Nearly all pigs in the US have parts of their body cut off without any painkillers. What part? [Answer: their tail, according to studies from Porcine Health Management]
  • On egg farms, what percentage of chicks are killed within 1 day of birth? [answer: 50% – look up chick culling]

The answers are all available on a cheat sheet for volunteers. This trivia format gives people heavy answers about animal cruelty in a digestible, quick format. For young children who are still learning the basics of the world, we have fun questions about animals (did you know fish can recognize different songs?). After the attendees play trivia, we talk together about the question they got, and provide concrete next steps, like writing a letter to their representative or corporation or taking the Veg Pledge.

Who can volunteer?

If you’re passionate about animal welfare and providing resources to help people move towards plant-based eating, this event is for you, whether you’re a seasoned vegan or totally new to outreach. We’ll support you in how to do effective outreach.

We ask that volunteers under 16 years old be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult. (Please sign up for just one volunteer slot together.)

The venue is in an outdoor park. We will have a 10×10 tent for shade, and the sidewalks are paved. There is a pathway to get into the park without stairs.

How can I sign up to volunteer?

Resources for Volunteers

We’ll reach out to you via email prior to the event to share contact info and location info at the event.

At the event, you’ll meet the other people participating in outreach, and read over all the outreach materials we are using. Then we’ll help you know what to say to attendees and give you spin wheel questions. If you’re new to outreach, you’re welcome to watch several interactions between other people to get an idea of how conversations typically go!

We’ll have snacks, drinks, sunspray, and bug repellent available to volunteers at the event.
