Volunteer to Do Outreach at High On Life 5K Walk!
Join us at High On Life 5K Walk to participate in the walk and then staff our outreach table. This walk is about more than steps it’s about honoring and celebrating our mental and physical well-being. Together, we are getting intentional with self-love, self-care, and mindful living while removing stigmas and normalizing healing. We are looking for a volunteer to help staff our booth and share about plant-based eating and the resources that CAA has to support individuals in advocacy and healthy living. You can sign up to volunteer at the bottom of this page!
What is High On Life 5K Walk?
At High On Life 5K Walk, you will start with an opening circle at 10 AM and participate by introducing yourself. This event is designed to bring our community together in the spirit of wellness, connection, and positive transformation; at 11 AM we will join a healing circle facilitated by LaTesha Watkins and then walk a 5K at 12 NOON. Your participation supports a movement that encourages individuals to prioritize mental, physical, and emotional health while celebrating the power of community. We ill participate by sharing the mission of Compassionate Action for Animals and how it fits these goals. Resource sharing at our outreach table will take place 1 – 2 PM. The event runs from 10 AM to 2 PM. Meet at Kelly’s Landing in Harriet Island Regional Park.
Volunteering
The volunteer shift requires walking and community engagement while talking about the resources that Compassionate Action for Animals has and the events we host. Volunteers will engage attendees in discussing how to make our diets more eco- and animal-friendly by moving towards plant-based eating. You will also invite interested people to pledge to move towards more plant-based eating.
At the outreach table from 1-2 PM, we’ll have a spin wheel game where attendees guess an answer to a question that helps them learn about the higher environmental harm of animal agriculture.
Sample spin wheel questions include:
- A huge amount of land is deforested in the US to grow soy. According to the USDA, what percentage of soy is fed to farmed animals?
- How many pounds of manure are produced per pound of beef?
- How much more land is required to produce a pound of chicken flesh vs a pound of beans?
Don’t worry, we’ll make sure you have the answers!
In addition, volunteers can help with assessing our impact by recording comments from attendees during the event. We’ll provide a pen and notebook for doing so.
Who can volunteer?
If you’re passionate about sustainability or about helping people move towards plant-based eating, this event is for you. We’ll support you in how to do effective outreach. All are welcome to volunteer and no experience is required.
Support for Volunteers
We’ll reach out to you prior to the event to confirm your participation. At that time we’ll introduce you to the staff leading the event, Tamuno Imbu. You’ll get his cell phone number in case anything comes up on the day-of the outreach.
At the event, we’ll make sure you get a chance to know the staff and other people participating in the 5K Walk. Tamuno will help you know what to say to attendees and give you the spin wheel Q&A sheet. We’ll also have a plant-based snack and a drink for you to enjoy.
Please bring:
- Water bottle (refill stations will be available)
- Wear walking shoes
- Yoga Mat or Towel to sit on during the circle
