Introduction to the Board of Directors – Compassionate Action for Animals (CAA)

Compassionate Action for Animals (CAA) is a Minnesota-based nonprofit dedicated to fostering empathy for animals and promoting a plant-based lifestyle. Guided by our mission, vision, and core values, our Board of Directors plays a critical role in shaping strategy, ensuring accountability, and supporting the long-term sustainability of the organization.

 

  • Expectations & Commitment:

    • Time commitment: 3–5 hours per month, including meetings.

    • Board meetings happen every other month. Board members must attend at least 5 of 6 meetings each year, reading materials in advance and participating in discussions.

    • Optional involvement in ad hoc committees (e.g., development).

  • Responsibilities:

    • Provide strategic leadership, strategic planning, and ensure programs’ alignment with CAA’s mission and values.

    • Approve budgets, monitor financial health, and support fundraising efforts.

    • Hire, evaluate, and support the Executive Director.

    • Help to recruit and onboard new board members.

  • Contribution:

    • Board members are expected to demonstrate leadership in giving — to make an annual financial contribution at a personally meaningful level and/or to actively support fundraising events.

  • Guidelines & Values:

    • Strive to follow a vegan lifestyle.

    • Uphold CAA’s core values: nonviolence, integrity, efficiency, egalitarianism, anti-oppression, approachability, and compassion for animals.

    • Maintain donor and community trust through ethical and transparent leadership.
